Chapter 15: Life or Death

Bolo lunged at Shane, wasting no time. The phone fell to the floor as Shane ducked aside, avoiding the ghost’s first attack. As big as he was, Bolo proved to be nimble and fast.

A massive hand caught Shane from behind as he tried to duck aside, lifting him from the ground.

Shane attempted to turn and retaliate, but the big ghost’s movements were swift and fluid. As quickly as he had snagged Shane, he spun and released him again, throwing him across the room and into the wall above the sofa.

The drywall crunched under Shane’s weight. A great flurry of dust fell free as he crashed onto the sofa. Bolo didn’t hesitate and came for him again. Shane’s reaction was more desperation than calculation. He kicked, aiming low, and slammed the heel of his foot into Bolo’s left knee.

The ghost had clearly never been in a fight with a living person capable of fighting back. If he had been alive, his leg would have fractured and crippled him. As a ghost, it was worse.

A combination of the force of the blow and the momentum of the ghost separated Bolo’s shin from his knee. It was like breaking a breadstick.

Bolo cried out, more from rage than anything else, as his leg came apart. He tumbled forward, catching his upper half on the edge of the sofa as Shane began to scramble backward, trying to get his bearings once more.

“What did you do?” the ghost bellowed, focusing on his maimed leg. Separated from the whole, the lower half had simply faded away like wisps of smoke in a breeze.

“I’m not done, don’t worry,” Shane answered. He slammed his fist down onto the side of Bolo’s face.

Metal and ghostly flesh met. Still shocked that a living person could hurt him, the ghost stepped back a few feet away from Shane and toward the kitchen, giving Shane a chance to catch his breath.

He stood, a sharp pain rolling across his entire right side where he’d slammed against the wall. His reprieve only lasted seconds, however.

Bolo lifted the dining table and hurled it into the living room. Shane dropped to the floor, narrowly avoiding it before it crashed onto the floor.

Bolo fell to the ground and crawled like an animal, quickly covering the distance between himself and Shane. His huge hands, cold like ice, grasped for Shane’s neck.

Under the ghost, Shane struggled to free himself and move the bigger man’s arms. He bucked his hips and tried to flip the ghost.

“I’m going to watch your soul leave your body,” Bolo hissed, leaning in close as he squeezed Shane’s neck. They were nose to nose, and Shane writhed in the dead man’s grip before opening his mouth and biting down on the ghost’s face.

Bolo shrieked as Shane’s teeth pierced ghostly flesh, tearing into it. It felt like biting a chunk of ice. He clamped his jaws shut and tore through the ghost’s nose and upper lip, pulling them away in a strangely thick mouthful that immediately turned to nothingness.
